Note: Numbers on this page refer to 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organizations other than private foundations, unless expressly stated otherwise. In many cases, these numbers will differ from those in reports prepared by state associations of nonprofits, because they may include tax-exempt organizations other than 501(c)(3) nonprofits, cover a different time period, be based on data retrieved from different sources or at different times, or for other reasons specific to that state. Source of employment numbers and percentages is U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released in 2019, based on the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), representing annual average 2017 employment for approximately 300,000 501(c)(3) organizations (the vast majority of employment). This is the only data on this page that includes 501(c)(3) foundations, which comprise less than 1% of employment.
